<p><em>Anuario de Investigación en Literatura Infantil y Juvenil (</em>AILIJ) is published by ANILIJ (Spanish Association of Research in Children's Literature.) The headquaters of this association is in the Faculty of Philology and Translation (University of Vigo, Spain). The journal is published on-line by the Publications Service of the University of Vigo. <em>Anuario de Investigación en Literatura Infantil y Juvenil </em>follows a double blind peer review policy. <p>The book covers the issue of gender in children's and young people's literature from different perspectives such as the traditional view of masculinity, the empathy of mothers and fathers with daughters and sons, the different types of family or binary people and the LGTBIQ+ community and it does so by covering a wide spectrum ranging from classic tales to animated films and with two basic aims: on the one hand, to examine the perception of the different existing roles and stereotypes and, on the other, to reveal the impact that children's and young people's literature can have on building a fairer and more egalitarian society, showing how it can offer alternative models that more accurately reflect the plural world in which we live.</p>María Jesús Barsanti Vigo

<p>Anthony Browne’s work is characterized by a variety of themes which are focused on the complexity of human relationships. By means of allusions and transtextuality those themes help us achieve a deep understanding of his works, which are enriched with his visual and literary narrative acting as hypertexts. Therefore, Browne incorporates a lot of contemporary artistic and pictorial references, which allow a reinterpretation of his works, and an approach to the world of art and visual culture by using imagination and readers’ background. This paper aims to state the function and meaning of the pictorial references in Anthony Browne’s work. <p>In young adult literature, there has been a boom in fiction related to unusual narratives, mainly long novels and sagas. This article analyses its impact on the Spanish market for storybooks, both written in Spanish or translated, which are aimed to readers over twelve. Thus, we have reviewed the publishers’ catalogues including collections for that age during 2023. After having described their content, it was discovered that school-oriented anthologies give a privileged place to stories with supernatural and marvelous elements. The volumes dealing strictly with the fantastic include mainly examples of 19th century Anglo-Saxon authors. Contributions to contemporary fantasy are scarce, with a few exceptions in the field of the marvellous or in original collective projects. In summary, these pages provide up-todate information on this repertoire, which is useful for researchers and mediators.</p>Cristina Bartolomé Porcar

<p>This article is written to celebrate “Ramón y Cajal’s Research Year.” It presents and analyzes<br />those works dealing with the life of this Nobel Prize-winning scientist which are aimed at children<br />or young people, and which have been published in Spain in the current century. The purpose of this<br />work is twofold: on the one hand, to compile the current corpus of works that deal with this topic; on<br />the other, to focus on the value of making Cajal’s biography known, as a uniquely suitable means to<br />promote and strengthen among young people values, attitudes and behaviors such as love for work or perseverance to achieve one’s objectives. Cajal constitutes an exceptional role model to promote these qualities because he managed to be successful due to his tireless work and his stubborn effort, despite living in a social environment that was not favourable for scientific feats.</p>Vicente Calvo FernándezNuria Anaya-Reig

<div><span lang="EN-US">This exploratory and ethnographic study focuses on gender equality in Early Childhood Education through the reading of picturebooks. In this sense, this paper analyses female teachers’ beliefs, representations and knowledge in order to identify if they read picturebooks in their classroom as a tool for developing attitudes about gender equality. The results, obtained from questionnaires, discussion group and researchers’ diary in a triangulation process, show that there are prejudices, and stereotypes in those teachers’ beliefs. Moreover, teachers demand training about the concept of gender, as well as the construction of diverse identities in the 21st century society. Besides, the results confirm that shared reading and conversation about picturebooks are useful because students´empathy and critical thinking is fostered; and therefore, an inclusive and sustainable education is promoted.</span></div>Juan SenísVirginia Calvo ValiosClara Callau Ponteque

<p>This paper examines the theoretical and methodological conceptions by Montesino (2003),<br />Teixidor (2005), Cerrillo and Sánchez (2006), Cerrillo (2015), and Herrera (2018) regarding literature for teenagers and young people. It considers such literature both as an art form and as a vehicle for<br />transmitting ideas and values related to establishing communication. This is a fundamental characteristic of the novel within this genre of literary creation. This study aims to delve into Carlo Frabetti’s narrative by analyzing two of his novels: <em>Terrible Ángel and Calvina</em>. To achieve this, the study utilizes bibliographic review methods to explore the theoretical and methodological conceptions of narrative features for children and young people. Additionally, content analysis and inductive-deductive analysis are employed to elucidate the characteristics of children’s and young adult narratives in the selected novels. Frabetti is renowned for creating more than forty works for children and young people and has received the Cervantes Chico Prize and the Barco de Vapor Prize for his novel Calvina. <p>Traditional tales have the potential to transport us to unknown and suggestive fictional worlds. Reading opens our minds to universes yet to be discovered, decoded, and interpreted. This paper aims to examine a selection of narrative texts, focusing on their statements, and their explicit and implicit discourses. To reach this aim, different versions of Cinderella will be analyzed by studying their ideology, as Cassany (2006) proposes. This article will scrutinize <em>Cinderella or the Little Glass Slipper</em> (Charles Perrault, 1697) and <em>Cinderella</em> (Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, 1812), to vindicate their stimulating potential, always through a critical lens that serves to interpret the text from all approaches, and to acknowledge the socializing nature of literature. The analysis of both versions of Cinderella will be preceded by a brief introduction about traditional tales, and followed by a rereading proposal that upholds the use of classic texts as a tool in promoting literature and literary language in Early Childhood and in Primary Education.</p>Iratxe Esparza MartinMaite Aperribay-Bermejo

<div><span lang="EN-US">In this work, the poetics of children’s graphic novel is discussed. Firstly, the concept of fiction is defined, which encompasses various forms, including ‘graphic literatures.’ Within this scope, comic is considered to be a versatile medium that supports diverse genres, including children’s graphic novels. Our research characterizes these novels through a triple attribution: to a medium (comic); to a genre graphic novel); and to a category of literature, (children’s and young adult literature). Having laid the groundwork, we analyze two recent instances of this genre. Firstly, we examine the issue of encountering the other in Memet, a children’s graphic novel by scriptwriter Noémie Masily and illustrator Isabella Cieli, published in Belgium in 2019 and translated into Spanish in 2022. <p>Retranslation of children’s and young literature is a reality, and works slightly differently from that for adults. This paper involves a quantitative study of the retranslations of two classics for the young people: <em>Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland</em> (1865), by Lewis Carroll, and <em>The Jungle Book</em> (1894), by Rudyard Kipling. The first objective is to determine the number of retranslations into different languages of these two canonical works to shed light on the patterns regarding retranslation, as well as publishing trends. To reach that aim, all retranslations of these novels to be identified in different databases have been searched for. The second objective lies in determining the possible reasons for these retranslations, and their differences from retranslating literature for adults.</p>Gisela Marcelo Wirnitzer

<p>This article examines how the insular space has been represented in the recent production of album books in Spain, as well as its relationship with the classic treatment of the island in children’s and young adult literature. More specifically, it identifies and describes some of the main typologies of islands found in these works, analyzing how they enable the articulation of certain identity issues and native cultural traditions. In addition, this work highlights the importance of illustration in constructing this insular imaginary in early readers. The selection of album books that constitute our corpus approaches the insular motif from different textual and iconic approaches, thus offering a representative sample of the narrative and expressive possibilities of this extraordinarily rich and varied theme. It is not intended to be an exhaustive list, but rather to provide an overview that illustrates the diversity of approaches and representations emerging in contemporary children’s and young adult literature in Spain.</p>Susana Rendón - Mesa
