Resumen

This paper explores the way in which grammatical (or syntactic) relations ha ve been treated in two functionalist models, ie the Theory of Functional Grammar (Dik 1997) and Role and Reference Grammar (Van Valin and LaPolla 1997). As pointed out by Van Valin and LaPolla ( 1997: 273 ), we should be able to determine if the "traditional IndoEuropean-based" notions of "subject" and "object" are universal relations, or if, on the contrary, they do not play a role in the grammar of every language
