Abstract

After many years left behind, the Amazons regained their importance in the 20th century; that mythical race of female warriors that were the cause of so much hatred and admiration in the classical world revive from their ashes with a renewed splendour in America during the 1940s. The frightful and cruel she-warriors, daughters of the bloodthirsty Ares, came back to life like righteous pupils of Athena placing themselves as the savers of the modern world. Once again myths and their histories serve man´s purpose, and they are moulded by him to satisfy his needs and this is what I have tried to show in my survey. During World War II an ancestral myth, namely the Amazons, is used and they are moulded according to the current needs. They are pacified, they become less aggressive, their androgyny nature disappears and even their divine origins are changed. So, a new hero appears in this case, a heroine, Wonder Woman. Just like the case of mythical Amazons, we are before a woman who lives in a man´s world, she´s the first female superhero that appears in comics.
