Abstract

The objective of this work is to analyse the settlement of one the regions of El Bierzo (León), the waley of Boeza, the main tributary of the river Sil, from the 10th and 12th century. The large number of documented villages and monasteries provides evidence of its dense population during the early Middle Ages, when the territory was organised from an economic and adminitrative point de view. As a result of this, Bembibre emerges as a village settlement
with clear urban features and will become the main economic and political center of the region.
