Abstract

The article deals with the negotiations concerning a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Ecuador and the United States. Giving the essential background information, it also analyzes not only the work in progress but also the social conflict, created by these negotiations. Furthermore, this article focuses on the processes of Free Trade Agreements in the Andean region with Columbia and Peru. Finally, from the perspective of present history, its aim is to offer some reflections on the economical development in Ecuador, its social and political conditions in the light of Ecuador´s opening-up towards an international market. Emphasis is laid on the national experience in a Latin American context.
