Abstract

Twenty five years after the Malvinas war (April 2nd – June 14th, 1982), it is
necessary to take a look at the problem from a contemporary point of view. This work is aimed to analyze the historical importance of the “Malvinas issue” within the foreign argentine policy. Due to space, this analysis will be dedicated to the last period of the latest dictatorship and to the causes of the war, which took place between April 2nd and June 14th 1982. The return of the democracy and the challenges faced by President Raúl R. Alfonsín are also analyzed, in the context of an Argentina that was isolated from the main economic and politic power centres. Carlos S. Menem’s government, supported a “seduction policy” towards the kelper population, and held an “umbrella” above the debate on the islands’ sovereignty, freezing it. At the present time, there is a notorious twist in the way the Argentinean inalienable demand is handled in the international forum, which has also provoked controversies regarding the proper way of dealing the foreign policy within a new international scenario.
