Abstract

On the basis of a detailed conceptualization on what is understood as the process of regional integration, the author describes different scenarios that he considers exists today in Latin America and the Caribbean, considering its positive and negative aspects. Three are the scenarios analyzed: the sub-regional schemes of integration in Central America, the Caribbean, the Andean Area and the Southern Cone; the enunciated South American Community of Nations and the polemic and disputable Free Trade Area for the Americas (FTAA) proposed by the USA government. With every intention the author omits to mention the reference to the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas, searching for reflection on the potentials included in this scenario and its options vis-à-vis the materialization of what is defined as the most favorable integration scenario for the countries in the region under the present hemispheric juncture.
