Abstract

It analyses the work twenty years of the history of the City of Merida, Venezuela (1781-1799), as it was seen by Vicar Francisco Antonio de Uzcátegui Dávila. We have entitled it “Living in Times of Crisis” because it refers to the changes of Bourbons influence that took place in the late years of the colony and the way these changes were received and felt by the subjects of the monarchy, who were the inhabitants of Merida. It is part of the research which started around 2000, and it deals with the study of the province of Merida-Maracaibo in the 17th and 18th centuries.
This work has been documented with files in the General Archive of the Indies
in Seville.
