Abstract

During three centuries of colonial rule, the Spanish monarchy development an important defense system to protect their vast American possessions. Points for the exchange of goods by excellence, ports, built important fortifications that gave security attacks of pirates and privateers during the 16th and 17th centuries, and the English fleet during the 18th colonial governments. These works were supplemented with inner, highlighting new Northern presidios and Chilean fortified villages’ defensive works. In the vast majority of cases were military engineers who blamed for these works, which marked the future development of cities.
