Abstract

Although the presence of Jews in Galicia from the 11th to the 15th centuries was almost nonexistent, there is some registered evidence of scattered Jewish settlements in Galician territories. Occasionally, this Jewish presence was represented by isolated people who lived inside Christian communities in places such as Betanzos, Caldas de Reis and Noia. But, there were Jews who occupied some urban areas establishing solid Jewish quarters. Those quarters have to be understood as voluntary settlements in a specific place and not as an isolated and excluded zone by the Christians. Villages such as Allariz or Ribadavia or the cities A Coruña and Ourense had Jewish quarters. The few preserved documents about the population come from different sources. However, in some cases, these documents provide personal data but mainly, professional information.
