Abstract

The image of the Spanish Cathedrals is redesigned because of the central choirs withdrawal, mainly during the XX th century. The room this element takes up is desecrated and, a symbolic and functional area is lost inside the temple. Choirs, are left not only to their removal but to their dismantling and sale. These operations impinge on the triple liturgical, architectonical and artistic dimension of these pieces in favor of their solely aesthetic estimation. Four out of the five Galician cathedrals are whitness to this liturgical renovation. The choirs withdrawal is a response to the wish to favor the faithful participation in ceremonies. Besides, in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela underlies a political interest: to renew its image to project it to the rest of the world, as a sanctuary of the New Crusade and scene of the revitalized The Way of Saint James.
