Abstract

The main aim of the paper is to propose an historical debate about medieval pilgrimages to Santiago. The lifetime of Diego Gelmírez, usually presented as a climactic moment, is under revision as far as written sources are scarce and hardly focused on pilgrims. Another issue is about the social profile of medieval pilgrims. Could we talk of a universal tradition? Finally, a brief reflection on the late Middle Ages. Even though it is well known as a period of crisis, it seems to have been a highlight period for the pilgrimages to Santiago
