Abstract

he Huerta of Alicante, prototype called deficit irrigation or dryland improved, offers one of the best examples of how water scarcity triggered the search for technical solutions, led the investment in water infrastructure and developed a peculiar relation between farmers and water owners. The management of water resources and their distribution by strict computation time by the Alicante town until 1739 allowed, despite the physical and climatic conditions, the development of a significant modern farming for centuries. Early separation of water from land to which it was attached in the early medieval distributions caused many conflicts throughout history and attempts to unify both properties, which never got.
