The “Alcaldes Mayores” of Palma city Council (1719-1812)

Abstract

This article contains a study of the alcalde mayor or teniente de Corregidor the city of Palma between 1719 and 1812. The alcalde mayor advised the magistrate of civil and criminal justice of first instance and replacing him in the councils during his absences in order to subordinate the municipal government to Royal authorities against the local oligarchy of the aldermen. The objective is study the terms of reference and the sociological and professional profile of the alcaldes mayores of the city of Palma between 1719 and extensible 1812 with an epilogue to the year 1835.
