This study illustrates the apotropaic religious motifs related to fertility, childbirth, motherhood, and childcare found in houses at the Fayumic site of Karanis. The meaning of the relevant depictions in artefacts and wall paintings is discussed in the context of the architectural structures with which they are associated, and it is argued that earlier objects and decorations suggest the perseverance of pharaonic attitudes in the household practice of religious actions to the same protective end.
