Abstract

In the autumn of 2021, archaeological interventions began at Praia de Canexol, where remains of structures from a Roman fish-salting factory had been previously documented. The walls, pavements, and archaeological materials on the cliff were being eroded by both marine and human activities. Consequently, in collaboration with the Parque Nacional Illas Atlánticas, a series of actions were initiated to recover and document these remains. Excavations of two test pits during 2021 and 2022, along with the removal of vegetation, confirmed the presence of preserved remains and facilitated the collection of samples. It was established that at least two salting factories existed, with identified features such as access areas, patios, salting tanks, and a tank for dye production. Geophysical prospecting, conducted in partnership with the company SOT, revealed additional remains extending south under the beach path, likely linked to these two factories and possibly others. The material culture indicates that the factory operated from the 1st to the 4th century.
