Abstract

The aim of this paper is to study the eclectic body of semantic strategies that some intellectuals of the right wing used from 1930 in order to interpret both political and artistic meaning of the Spanish avant-garde movement. The research is focused on Esencia de Verbena, a film directed by Ernesto Giménez Caballero, the publisher of La Gaceta Literaria and a fascist activist, in 1930. The film analyzes the verbena, a catholic-popular tradition as a metaphor of the continuity between the eighteen century attitudes towards fugacity of life and the modern apolitical joy. We have also tried to study its influence on Basilio Martín Patinos Canciones para después de una guerra, shooted in 1971.
