Abstract

José María Pemán’s Poema de la Bestia y el Ángel, first published in 1938 by Ediciones Jerarquía, is one of the most representative books of the poetry produced in Franco’s faction during the Spanish Civil War. There is a series of topoi that appear in this kind of literature of war: primitivism, anti-machinism, a new sunrise, lost glories of the imperial past… This article intends to be a general approximation to war aesthetics and, at the same time, a brief analysis of Pemán’s book.
