Abstract

In this paper we have tried to apply a theoretical approach about “disautomated speech” to some works by Aub in Sala de espera, which includes several short everyday-life plays. In disautomated speech the hearer is aware of the cognitive processes he uses in understanding what is said (these processes are more automated in idioms, ritual expressions and phraseological units in general). For example, a reliteralized idiom shows awareness of these decodification strategies and so it is a kind of disautomated speech. The analysis can also be applied to inference in indirect speech and disambiguation of lexical and grammatical meaning. All these pragmatic knowledge is used by Aub in order to create humanized (not automated) people for his plays.
