Abstract

This article tries to propose a generic classification for Poema trágico del Español Gerardo (1615-1618) by Gonzalo de Céspedes y Meneses, to end the uncertainties about the gender of the work. For it, the specific characteristics of the work are analyzed in detail and it confronts with the distintive features of Spanish byzantine genre. In addition, there are examined the marks that Spanish sentimental romance, one of the narrative basis of the work, has left in the Español Gerardo
