Abstract

The universal dimension of Cervantes’ El Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha has forced several critics to employ the concept of cervantine tradition in order to assess the influence of the cervantine novel in the different European narrative traditions. The aim of the present article is to explore the influence which the cervantine model proposed by Henry Fielding in his first novel The Life and Adventures of Joseph Andrews and his Friend Mr Abraham Adams (1742) effects on the birth of the German cervantine tradition, which arises with the publication of W. E. Neugebauer’s Der Teutsche Don Quichotte (1753) and C.M. Wieland’s Der Sieg der Natur über die Schwärmerei oder die Abenteuer des Don Sylvio von Rosalva.
