Abstract

The current article, a sequel in the series on history of foreign language teaching in Western Europe which started in 2004, presents a historical analysis of the linguistic material conceived as textbooks for teaching and learning language in this part of Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries.

This period, in which Latin has lost its linguistic hegemony, is characterised by the dominance of the European languages. Such a situation, which will be consolidated in the second half of the 19th century, marks the development of the discipline Foreign Language Teaching after the Humanistic period. This period is distinguished by the fact that not only is there no one common way of teaching foreign languages in Western Europe, but also that there are different traditions.
