Abstract

Our experience in the task of plunging into the past in order to search for foreign language teachers who came before us and to analyze their methods –a task which we have undertaken in previous volumes of this journal–, has allowed us to learn about the development of this discipline from its earliest origins in the cultures of Antiquity, until the late nineteenth century. Our intention now is to complete this task. Conceived in the same methodological line as the previous ones, this article is therefore the last step of a series of works that started in 2004 and have continued uninterruptedly until today with the aim of providing a comprehensive overview of the history of teaching and learning foreign languages in Western Europe.
