Abstract

Cervantes’ novel El Quijote is an important literary work which has influenced worldwide literature ever since it was published. An example of this influence can be found in English literature where a variety of what is known as “quixotic novels” exists. However, it is important to bear in mind that this influence has been different along centuries. Thus Quixote’s presence in English literature in the 17th and 18th centuries is evident, while in the 19th century it is more difficult to find, as it was more diluted, although Eliot, Thackeray and Dickens were evidently influenced by Cervantes’ novel. This study is going to be centred on the analysis of Quixote’s influence in Elizabeth Gaskell’s The Moorland Cottage.
