RECONCILIATION OF FAIRY TALES WITH NO HAPPY ENDINGS IN CURRENT RE-READINGS

La princesa y el rey pez, by Jordi Sierra i Fabra, proposes a re-reading of The Little Mermaid. The story was originally published in 1837 together with more stories that are commonly considered to be fairy tales. However, due to the lack of a happy ending and to the fact that the antagonist goes unpunished, other researchers claim that, “technically speaking” (Cashdan, 2000: 152), it is not a fairy tale. In this paper we suggest an approach to both works with the intention of shedding light on this subject. Firstly, we present the theoretical framework regarding strategies to perform re-readings and narrative endings. Secondly, we focus on the analysis of each work. Finally, we show where these stories differ. The final result leads to a number of questions on the fictional agreement that the Danish author did not take into account in the original work, and that represent the key to understand the story at the present time.
