This paper aims to delve into the critical formation of your readers (Eco, 2003) which involves the book O colar de Pérolas (2004), by Graziela Bozano Hetzel, illustrated by Andréia Resende. Reception theories (Jauss, 1979, 1994; Iser, 1996, 1999) will be applied. This contemporary work was selected due to its aesthetic value in verbal and imagery language, its treatment of psychological themes, its dialogue with the literary canon, and its communicability with the implicit reader (Iser, 1999). This text suggests the hypothesis that critical reading can perform a social function (Jauss, 1994), as it allows young readers to review and expand their expectations by means of reflection. It is assumed that the reading of Hetzel’s work (2004) and its intertextuality, encourages young readers’ literary experience (Fillola, 1996).
