THE LABYRINTH OF RETRANSLATION OF CHILDREN'S AND YOUNG ADULT CLASSIC LITERATURE: ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND AND THE JUNGLE BOOK

Retranslation of children’s and young literature is a reality, and works slightly differently from that for adults. This paper involves a quantitative study of the retranslations of two classics for the young people: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865), by Lewis Carroll, and The Jungle Book (1894), by Rudyard Kipling. The first objective is to determine the number of retranslations into different languages of these two canonical works to shed light on the patterns regarding retranslation, as well as publishing trends. To reach that aim, all retranslations of these novels to be identified in different databases have been searched for. The second objective lies in determining the possible reasons for these retranslations, and their differences from retranslating literature for adults.
