Abstract

This work focuses on the norms of translation from Catalan into Spanish of two book collections published by La Galera editorial. These collections, La Galera d'or and Desplega vela, comprise forty-five volumes first written in Catalan, some of the first in Catalan children's literature after the Spanish Civil War. These will be systematically compared, taking into account macro-textual as well as micro-textual features. We will also pay attention to illustrations, given that they don't change and keep in translation the same Catalan cultural references as the source texts. As we will see, the translation norms are quite irregular and highlight the poor situation of childrers literature at the time. Despite this, some norms can be pointed out, which tend towards adequacy or acceptability. Those tending to adequacy are due to the phenomenon of exportation; that is to say, the producers of the source texts often produced the translations as well. The norms tending to acceptability are due to the pedagogic aims of the publishers, as well as to the longer tradition of children's literature in the Spanish polysystem.
