Historia de la traducción de la literatura infantil y juvenil en España: Nuevas aproximaciones críticas

Abstract

This article offers a preliminary approach to the history of translation of literature for children and young people in Spain from the eighteenth century to the present. The study not only revises the canon of literature translated in Spain, but also analyses the circumstances which conditioned the establishment of this canon. Therefore, the various strategies adopted by the translator are examined, as well as his/her assessment of the concepts of childhood and youth. The article also deals with the figure of the translator as a cultural agent, educator and creator, focusing on his/ her cultural and hermeneutic position and the influence of all these factors in the resulting translation. Ihroughout the article many authors and works translated from different languages are mentioned. This study deals also with the importance of the editors role and mentions the particular case of enlightened women who had the chance to develop both as individuals and as intellectuals due to their activities as authors and translators.
