The presence of nursery rhymes and Disney in Shrek and Shrek 2. The role of intertextuality in DreamWorks

The Shrek saga has been characterised by revolutionising the world of animation by providing an ironic view of the classics and, in many cases, relying on references to Disney films. The continuous presence of allusions to classic fairy tales, to their Disney adaptations and to children songs with strong cultural bonds like the nursery rhymes, through different channels becomes an attractive and prolific field of study. Thus, this paper aims to analyse the role of intertextuality in Shrekand Shrek 2.
The study focuses on the use of nursery rhymes and their translation in these animated films, and on the strategies of intertextuality and contratextuality in the production of humour.
