Quixote before Quixote: a new look at Contradicción de los catorce artículos de la fe cristiana

Abstract

A new edition of the “Prologue to the author” of the Contradicción de los catorce artículos de la fe cristiana that Ibrahim Taibalí wrote in 1637 is given, and which recalls an episode in Alcalá de Henares in August 1604, where Don Quixote is quoted months before the printing of the book in the presses of Juan de la Cuesta. The topic of the various types of readers of the work referred to in the prologue also allows us to return to the subject of Don Quixote as a book of chivalry and the different readers who came to him in Spain and in Europe.
