Abstract

The author revisites the phonetical reality of the allophones corresponding to the Castilian phoneme /j/ (mayo, conyuge) as well as opinions about the phonological classification of this phoneme. Finally he proposes his own interpretation from a functional point of view, studying how /j/ behaves with respect to different binary phonological oppositions and concluding, againts wellknown theories, that /j/ cannot be regarded as the lax-voiced correlate of /c/ in modern Castilian system.
