Fifty years of Manuel Seco's Diccionario de dudas y dificultades de la lengua española (1961-2011): standard, structure and contents

The year 1961 saw the publication of the first edition of the Diccionario de dudas y dificultades de la lengua española (DDDLE) by Manuel Seco, a work which, over the course of fifty years (the last edition was published in 2011), has left an indelible imprint on the lexicography of Spanish. Despite this and despite the fact that it has been a key reference text for many people interested in the language, it has not received the attention it deserves.
The successive editions of the dictionary show both how the author’s initial approach has evolved over time and reflect the changes introduced in its pages. In order to show this development, the first part of the article deals primarily with the paratexts of the various editions; in doing so it sheds light on the author’s position with regard to norms and uses, whilst also focusing on the modifications made both to the dictionary’s external appearance and internal structure. This analysis makes it possible to identify the most important editions, namely the 1st (1961), 2nd (1964), 9th (1986), 10th (1998) and the edition released in 2011. The second part examines the changes made to the dictionary’s macrostructure and microstructure based on the comparison and analysis of the lemmas of the letter F in the five editions mentioned, with particular attention to additions and deletions.
This approach reveals Manuel Seco’s position in relation to the norm, not only in theoretical terms, through the various
prologues inserted at the beginning of the work, but also in practical terms, through the application of these principles to
the selection of the entries studied. Our research shows the author’s fidelity to his initial proposal, a fidelity that is always
accompanied by a careful and thorough review of the phonetic, prosodic, morphological, syntactic and lexical issues that
he examines over the fifty years of publication of the work.
