Abstract

Any critical work on the poetry of Juan Eduardo Cirlot (1916-1973) inevitably makes reference to the discovery of “permutation” as a new composition technique. The aim of this paper is to research the range of influences under which permutation emerged as a technique for writing poetry. In order to do this, the four sections of the paper focus on the most important influences that originated the technique and endowed it with its ideological status. The discussion of such aspects aim to support the basic premise that permutation is not only a composition technique, but also a complex system of writing revealing an outlook on life and understanding poetry.
