Abstract

Among the many rewritings of Shakespeare’s work, Mama Day stands out as an original reelaboration of The Tempest which deconstructs and subverts the British canon of culture, class and, above all, race, by means of intertextuality and the many connections with Shakespeare’s work. The bard becomes the counterpoint of an emerging tradition: that of today’s black women writers. Now black Miranda answers back to Prospero’s unquestionably white and patriarchal authoritative voice. The reconfiguration of the female character establishes a subversive strategy which is absolutely innovating because from being a marginal figure becomes the centre, shifting Prospero in a matriarchal system in which she has a power with interesting concomitances with that of the exiled duke of Milan.
