Abstract

Since postcolonial theory became an integral part of academic research, many unexpected contexts have been exhaustively analysed in terms of postcoloniality. In the case of Scotland, the debates on the relevance of this critical standpoint have been a relatively recent phenomenon that even nowadays enjoys mixed reception by experts in the culture of the nation. The historical relations of mutual dependence between Scotland and England, as well as Scotland’s participation in the expansion of the Empire, have determined such radical divergence. This paper studies the different responses voiced since the 1990’s in journals such as Scotlands, Scottish Literary Journal, and the special issue published by SPAN on “Celtic Nationalism and Postcoloniality”. More recent analysis have also been considered in order to illustrate how the inclusion of postcolonial theory within Scottish Studies is still a matter of great controversy in the first decade of the twenty-first century.
