Abstract

This article studies illustration functions in books from the invention of the printing to the present day. The ratio between image and text varies deeply from the exclusive use of one or another element. Initially, images facilitated the reading learning to the illiterates, children or adults. Their functions have increased until the twenty-first century; then, illustration reaches a great artistic value and turns the book into an object of worship.
