Abstract

Following current approaches, we have carried out a brief theoretical analysis of pull-the-tab books and their potential to provoke interactivity between the reader and the book. This is an unexplored field which paradoxically still lacks academic research in spite of the growing tendency to leverage the materiality of books. Pull-the-tab books can be widely categorized as object-books or even as toy books, specially addressed to children. We have analysed a representative corpus, studying
verbal and illustrative/graphic strategies; and the most relevant rhetorical and stylistic devices, in an attempt to contribute to a characterization/definition of these books. We aim at distinguishing these “pull-the-tab books” from other categories of the “universe” of toy books.
