Abstract

Fishing cooperatives, whose models are medieval fisherman’s associations and Castilian public granaries, originated during the First World War as a moderate proposal of association of a mixed and inter-class nature. The purpose of these cooperatives was to group the fishermen of the majority traditional fleet in order to improve their terrible working conditions and to keep them from the emerging fishing associativism. However, the evolution of their demands during the Second Republic, a period in which many of them carried out an important collective task related to welfare along the Galician coast, raises some doubts about the previously mentioned conciliatory character
