In this paper we present a comparative study between El valiente justiciero o El ricohombre de Alcalá by Agustín Moreto (1657) and Calisto Boldún´s recasting (1872), a 19th century playwright. This recasting has not been studied previously. Therefore, we will offer a comparative study between the Baroque play and the homonymous recasting, in order to establish the similarities and differences between both plays and to try to justify the changes introduced by the recaster. For it, we will explain the patterns followed by nineteenth-century recasts and we will start from these to compare the treatment of comedy in all its constituents: structure, characters, style, time, space and metrics. We will try to find the causes and effects of the changes made by Boldún, to finally draw conclusions and assess the quality of the recasting. We will support our work in specialized studies on the rewriting of baroque plays in subsequent centuries as well as on Moreto and this comedy, recently edited by Alfredo Hermenegildo.
