Abstract

The allegorical condition of the Prologue of Gonzalo de Berceo’s Milagros de Nuestra Señora and the traditional definition of allegory as “continued metaphor” do noy keep us from discovering a metonymical strategy int he text, as important as the metaphorical one in which the basic identification meadow-Mary is defined. As christian allegory impose, it’s about metonimies always referring to Christ through the person, the attributes and the functions of his mother. We shall attempt to analyse this metonymical procedure and its relations of instrumentum pro effectu and effectus pro causa, by which the final and true referrible for each of the eight allegorical images in the meadow, metaphorically associated with Mary, is Christ himself.
