Motor competence is a key term to understanding the evolution of the human movement and in achieving a healthy lifestyle. Aim: The aim of this study was to know the level of motor competence in the Galician first year students of compulsory secondary education and its relation to various independent variables. Methods: 125 students were assessed. The camsa test (HALO, 2017) was selected for the study of the sample. An ad hoc single response survey was designed to collect the data of the variables analysed; (i) sex, (ii) place of residence, (iii) physical activity practice, (iv) academic performance, (v) physical education performance, (vi) trimester of birth and (vii) presence of siblings at home. Results and conclusions: The data show a low level of acquisition of motor competence of the students. The relation between a higher volume of physical activity and a higher level of motor competence was demonstrated (p = 0.001), also proving its involvement with a higher performance in physical education (p = 0.00. It has not been possible to relate a high level of motor competence to the other variables considered.
